🔍 How to Read an Indian Vehicle Registration Number
Every vehicle registered in India is assigned a distinct alphanumeric registration number conforming to Section 41 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A typical registration number is formatted into four components:
- State Code (e.g., MH): 2-letter ISO standard code defining the State or Union Territory.
- District / RTO Code (e.g., 12): 2-digit sequential code identifying the local RTO office (e.g., MH-12 is Pune RTO).
- Alphabetical Series (e.g., AB): Running alphabet series identifying the vehicle category and chronological issue batch.
- Unique 4-Digit Serial Number (e.g., 1234): Unique number from 0001 to 9999 assigned to the vehicle.
🇮🇳 What is the Bharat (BH) Series Registration?
Introduced by MoRTH in September 2021, the Bharat (BH) Series eliminates the need to transfer vehicle registration or seek an NOC when relocating between Indian states. BH series registrations follow the format YY BH #### XX (e.g., 24 BH 1234 AA). Eligible vehicle owners include Defence personnel, Central/State Government employees, and private sector employees whose employers have offices in four or more States/UTs.

Relocating Interstate? Key 12-Month Vehicle Rules
Under Section 47 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988:
- Short-Term Visits (Under 12 Months): You are legally permitted to drive a vehicle registered in another state for up to 12 consecutive months without needing to re-register or change the number plate.
- Permanent Relocation (Over 12 Months): You must apply for a No Objection Certificate (NOC - Form 28) from your originating RTO and apply for re-registration (Form 27) and local road tax payment at your new city's RTO.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What does the RTO code tell you about a vehicle?
The RTO code directly indicates the exact administrative district and Regional Transport Authority where the vehicle was originally registered and where its permanent master records are maintained on the central Vahan network.
Is it mandatory to re-register a vehicle when moving within the same state?
No. Moving to a different district within the same state does not require a change of registration number or new RTO number plate. You only need to submit a change of address request (Form 33) to update your registered residential address in the RC records.
Where can I find my vehicle's RTO code?
Your RTO code is the first four characters of your number plate (e.g., DL-01 or MH-12). It is also printed prominently on your physical Registration Certificate (RC smart card) and available in digital format in DigiLocker or mParivahan.
